“Thank so much for helping me understand it!” says Barbara to John

He replies by saying “That’s the point of a community!”

Barbie begins to read her paper. “In those days, it was easy to get lost in the crowd; loss of identity is a terrifying thing. The zombies are the multitude; they have no identity within the crowd. Zombies are soulless beings, they have no mind of their own; they are being controlled by an urge, a spell; a disease. Even the man that remained himself among the hoard of zombies lost himself to an urge: that of hunger. Zombie films like Perished are here to explain the importance of a society, the importance of the community, the importance of the conservation of individuality. Without a society, within our primal selves, there is no individuality. Society, although it groups us together, makes us a crowd, makes us a multitude, and is still able to conserve our individuality. Did they go to watch zombies to have fun? Yes, but also to understand the worst-case scenario.”

Wow! Barbara, you get an A!” says Ms. Turner.

“Well, negative emotions don’t go away," responds Mike "and they demand periodic exercise. Is our appetite for horror greater than ever when we sense the beginning of the end of how we live? I think so. For example, throughout the range of options you have in zombie media, the prevalent theme you will find is that of the loss of identity. The loss of identity does not only apply to the human turned zombie, but to the remaining survivors as well. You can easily see this in Perished.”

“Yes," interjects John "it is everyone for themselves, and because of this, they have lost their identities in society to replace it with the need to survive.”

“Wow! I think I understand it. I need to go home and write all of this down for tomorrow!” Blurts out Barbara as she runs for the door excited.

"I'm so sorry, Skipper," says Barbie. "I have to run off to school now. But I promise I will fix your laptop when I get home from school." "You better!" Skipper replies as she playfully hits Barbie with a pillow.

"What is the nightmare, though? What is the metaphor?" asks Barbara. "Keep in mind," responds Mike "that we get ideas from our environment, from the people around us, from everything that happens around us. People need inspiration; they need a starting place from where to begin. Back then they had the Ebola outbreak, mass shootings, biological warfare, and a population addicted to consuming as inspiration, and the zombie as an attraction."

“I’ve never thought that zombies could represent fears.” says Barbie while in thought. “The question hangs:” she continues, ”Why would any intelligent person who is already horrified by the news of the day want to watch horror movies? I just don’t get it.”
"What is the nightmare, thou…

Have you guys seen the movie that was assigned?” asks Barbara. Mike and John both nod. She continues “Although I understand that they reflect issues of the 21st century, I still don’t understand why anyone would watch them.”

“It’s okay,” replies John, “the answer is that, unlike earnest, realistic films with Good Housekeeping Seals of approval, horror movies – with their sadism, unapologetic sensationalism, lack of nuance, and avid gratification of pathological impulses – offer sharper, more acute versions of our worst case scenarios, they are like brilliant metaphors for what haunts us, and, obviously haunted the people in the 21st century. That is why when we pay our four or five bucks and seat ourselves at tenth-row center in a theater showing a horror movie, we are daring the nightmare.”

"Ugh!" grunts Barbara exasperated after watching Perished and says “That was a pretty dark movie. Why would anyone want to sit down and watch such a gruesome, sadistic movie like that?”

Nina overhears and replies saying “Oh, I was in that class last year. The thing is that the zombie goes far beyond entertainment. He becomes a way for us to express our abstract, dark, negative thoughts and possibilities. That’s why these movies exist.”

Barbara is speechless and thanks her sister. She still doesn’t fully understand it, so she calls her friends Mike and John to meet her at the library. She really needs a good grade in this class.

Ms. Turner continues “When we look at the zombie, we see the face of society back then and see their fears expressed through their movies. This can be demonstrated through the use of a zombie film called Perished. As homework, I want you to watch it and tell me what it represents to you, considering the problems of the 21st century. Examples would be fear of technology, infectious disease, and overpopulation, among other things. Remember to think of the zombie as a metaphor. Homework is due tomorrow, class dismissed.”
Ms. Turner continues “When we…
